General risk management for dentists.

Risk Management Consult: Dentistry Fundamentals, 2nd Edition PSIC

Overview

Most malpractice claims against dentists are avoidable.  That’s because the underlying problem is rarely the dentist’s lack of skill or expertise, but arises from faulty communication, such as not understanding one’s own duty under the given circumstances, failure to take and record an adequate medical and dental history, inadequate coordination with the patient’s other caregivers, failure to provide the patient with enough information to meet the criteria of informed consent, and so on.

Objectives

When you complete this course, you should be able to:
1. Explain the need for orally reviewing with new patients any written medical history questionnaires or other documents they provide.
2. Understand the importance of obtaining and reviewing the patient’s prior records.
3. Recognize the importance of communicating with the patient’s primary care physician and other care givers.
4. Describe the duties of a dentist in obtaining informed consent.
5. Understand your duty when the patient fails to follow your advice for follow-up care or testing.

This course is valid for release January 1, 2019 and will expire December 31, 2021.
